Swine Flu Alert

Several cities in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex are have closed their public schools due to rising concerns about the spread of swine flu. A 23 month old child in Texas has died from the flu.

Although we should take precaution about this health threat, I don't think parents and caregivers should panic over it. According to the news, the common flu virus alone kills thousands of people in the US every year, so I don't think we need to cause more panic. The last health scare was the bird flu virus in Asia and many countries took action to contain it. Since people live so close to animals, it is no wonder that the virus made the jump from the animal and mutate into something that can affect people.

Since we know that this virus is spread via coughing and sneezing, just remember to get kids to wash hands when they come back from the outdoor. And also take note of diarrhea and vomiting that accompany fever, body ache, running nose, sore throat and coughing.

Since I am not bringing daughter to get grocery, I let her play in the patio with her own pot of soil and a spade. At least now she will not be killing my plants when I am not watching.
