Lactation Consultation
Yesterday I had a follow-up appointment with a Lactation Consultant, Carol. As husband and DD1 were not feeling well, I went alone with DD2.
All praise be to Allah SWT DD2 weighs 7 lbs 12 oz. Last Saturday when we had the appointment with Carol, she only weigh 7 lbs 5 oz.
Yesterday for the first time, DD2 nursed very well. She latched on for 15 minutes on one side and stayed on. It felt great to see her nursing from me. On the other side she did not even want to stay on for more than 1 minute because the milk flow was really slow. So she end up drinking breast milk and formula milk from a bottle.
Carol said that the 15 minutes latching did not yield sufficient milk for DD2. And the fact that DD2 was impatient to wait for the milk to let down, so she let me decide how I can to go from there. I told her that for DD1, it was difficult to nurse her because I didn't have sufficient milk. I told her that I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if I am unable to nurse DD2 too. If I have to pump milk every three hours so that DD2 can have some, I will be ready to do so.
Alhough I have an electric Ameda Purely Yours breast pump, she said that I can rent the hospital grade Medela breast pump for $75 per month. She also told me to take fenugreek to boost milk supply, and to call her for another appointment if I want to try nursing again.
While waiting for husband, she asked where I am from and how I meet husband. When she asked about our religion, I told her that we are Muslims. She didn't seem to be bothered by this, and was fascinated by our love story. She also asked if I will be going back to work soon, and I told her I want to spend time with my children while they are still young. She then revealed that she is having twins and will likely quit her job soon to raise them. She has been a registered Nurse for 32 years, 27 years in Labor and Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 5 years as a Lactation Consultant. We both agreed that DFW is a great place to raise a family.
Husband will be bringing DD2 to see her pediatrician on Friday, so we do not need to see Carol again. I am thankful for her patience and guidance. Allah SWT willing I hope she will have a smooth pregnancy and have beautiful and healthy children in a few months time.
