College and University
After reading this blog entry by a Muslim sister who is homeschooling her three boys in UK, http://homeeducationstoriesuk.blogspot.com/search/label/Islamic%20home%20education,
I finally figured out why it took me a while to understand my confusion about the terms 'college' and 'university' used in the USA.
In Singapore and UK, we use the word 'college' when we are talking about prep school to enter 'university'.
I attended a Junior College (for GCE 'A' Level Diploma) for two years to hopefully gain entry to the National University of Singapore (for a degree program).
However in the USA, kids attend student up to 12th grade (high school), then sit for a SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) exam to get direct entry into a college (aka university) to study a degree program.
Students can also chose to attend a 2 year community college and transfer to a university to complete another 2 years of a specific degree program.
All praise be to Allah SWT, mystery solved.
