10 Signs of Good Character
10 signs of good character
Giving the salaam and being cheerful: the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said,"You will not enter into Jannah until you believe, and you will not believe (i.e. have complete faith) until you love each other. Should I not guide you to a deed that if you do it you will love each other? Spread the salaams (peace) amongst yourselves." Narrated by Muslim.
"Smiling in the face of your brother is charity." Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree in al-Adab al-Mufrad (the book we currently study from) and it is saheeh.
Giving salams (peace) to only those who you know is a sign of the hour as ibn Masood narrated that said, "Indeed from sign of the hour is that the salaams is only given to people familiar to each other." Narrated by Imaam Ahmad and at-Tabaraanee and shaykh al-Albaanee declared the hadeeth saheeh.
Avoiding argumentation even if you are right: the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "I am the guarantor of a house in the lower level of Jannah (paradise) for the one who avoids argumentation even if he is right. I am the guarantor of a house in the mid level of Jannah for the one who avoids lying even while it is in jest. I am the guarantor of a house in the highest level of Jannah for the one who has good character." Narrated by Abu Dawood and shaykh al-Albaanee declared the hadeeth saheeh.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The whole world is a provision, and the best object of benefit of the world is the pious woman.
Giving heartfelt handshakes: Whenever the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) shook someone else's hand, he would continue doing so until the other person first removed his hand.
Saying a good word: Saying a good word is a very noble deed and it is not an act of hypocrisy. The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "A good word is charity." Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim.
Refraining from speaking except for which there is a benefit. The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever believes in Allaah and the last day should say that which is good or be quiet." Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree.
Not having secret discussions in a public gathering because this creates animosity in hearts of those who are excluded from such conversations. The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "If there is three of you, then two persons should have a private discussion to the exclusion of the third person unless they include everyone for that saddens the others." Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim.
Avoiding that which does not concern one, because the one who does such will fall into that which he/she does not like. The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "It is from the good character of a Muslim that he avoids that which does not concern him." Narrated b y at-Tirmidhee and shaykh al-Albaanee declared the hadeeth saheeh.
Hadith - Bukhari's Book of Manners #329
... Ibn 'Abbas said, "If you wish to mention the faults of your friend, mention your own faults first." Wanting good for others and avoiding jealously because jealously is one of the biggest reasons that leads to the destruction of the ties of brotherhood. The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "Do not envy one another..... A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim." Narrated by Muslim.
Not looking down on others: Allaah says, "O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former. " (Surah al-Hujaraat) Al-Tabaree stated in his tafseer that women were specifically mention as a separate group even though they fall within the general meaning of those who believe because belittling and looking down on others is more common amongst them than it is amongst men. Ai'shah said, "I said Yaa rasulu-Allaah Safiyyah is a woman...and she gestured with her hands hinting that she meant she is short, so he said, 'you said a word if it was placed in the ocean it would have corrupted all of it.'" Narrated by at-Tirmidhee and shaykh al-Albaanee declared the hadeeth saheeh.
Shaykh Abdur-rahman as-Sadee said in his tafseer regarding this ayah, "This shows that every action or statement that indicates that one is belittling his Muslim brother, then it is haraam (prohibited), impermissible. And this is also indicative of the fact that the one who is belittling the other considers himself to be better than others, whereas it is quite possible that the one who is being looked down on is better as is the reality in most cases. For looking down on others does not occur except from someone whose heart is filled with evil characteristics, and this is why the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "It is enough evil within a person that he looks down on his Muslim brother.
"Giving gifts and being generous: The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, "Give gifts to each other and you will love each other." Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree.
The Noble Qur'an - Al-Hujurat 49:10 - The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islâmic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allâh, that you may receive mercy.
Kind words and forgiving of faults are better than Sadaqah (charity) followed by injury. And Allah is rich and he is most forbearing. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:263)
